Arundhati Roy was born on 24th November 1961 in Shillong, Meghalaya, India to Ranjit and Mary Roy. She is a prominent name and is known to have stirred a number of controversies because of her various writings on political, environmental and social issues.

She is best known for her novel, The God of Small Things for which she also won the prestigious Booker Prize in 1997. Most of her childhood was spent in Kerala in Ayumanan where she went to Corpus Christi school at Kottayam. Then she joined the Lawrence School at Lovedale in Nilgiris in the state of Tamil Nadu.

Her first husband, Gerard da Cunha who is a famous architect met her when she was studying architecture in the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi. Her second husband, Pradip Krishen is a prominent filmmaker and he made an award winning film, Massey Sahib with Arundhati playing a village girl in the movie. During the struggling periods of her life, she changed many job and also ran aerobics classes at many 5 star hotels in Delhi. She achieved great success after her book, The God of Small Things and also her financial conditions improved.
